The Emerald Isle and Beyond

My experiences at Trinity College and traveling around Europe

The Craic Was Mighty!
[info]cristiona9

I'm home - today I flew home to California.

The plane ride wasn't too bad at all.  When I flew to Dublin in September I left out of San Jose and took the layover in Chicago, as I thought the direct flight would leave me cramped and stir-crazy.  But, as it turns out I didn't like having to switch planes, that ended up being too crazy for me.  So, this time I took a direct flight to San Francisco.  I handled it just fine.  I got 2 hours sleep the night before (tried to stay up all night, but couldn't make it past 4am) so I was tired enough that I slept a bit off and on (I mean, as much as you can sleep on a plane, ya know).  They also showed a few TV shows and three movies.  The first one, Fool's Gold, I didn't watch cause when I saw the trailer in the theatres it looked pretty bad - so I tried to sleep.  The second one, The Spiderwick Chronicles: watched the first half hour while eating lunch and then decided it was not my cup of tea, so again, tried to sleep.  The third movie was P.S., I Love You, which I LOVE and saw in the theatres twice, so I forced myself to stay awake for that.

When I landed I got off the plane and went through immigration very quickly.  The part that took forever was waiting at baggage claim!!  There was another flight come in from Amsterdam and they put both flights on the same carrousel and, my gosh, I must have been there a half an hour trying to get my luggage!  Plus, my stomach was bothering me a bit, which made it seem like an eternity.  Nevertheless they finally came and I was ready to walk out to the lobby.

Mom and Dad were waiting right there for me.  It was so good to see them!  8 months is a long time!  And Mr. Miles, world's cutest beagle, was also waiting in the car for me.

We decided that we would have lunch at Chili's down in Mountain View in route back home to Gonzales.  And guess who was there - Aunt Nan and Uncle Phil!  More family to see, it was so wonderful!  We had a very nice lunch and I enjoyed some chicken soft tacos, something I hadn't had in 8 months.  You can find Mexican food in Dublin, it's just not that common and the selection is more scarce than here.  They were very yummy.  Dad asked me what I really want food wise that I've missed cause I couldn't get it in Ireland and I said, well, at some point I will definately need to "run for the border" to Taco Bell and I also want some Kraft Maccaroni and Cheese.  The later choice made both Dad and Mom laugh (but hey, Bridge forgot to give me the box she brought back with her, so I've still been without it).

When we got home I took a look around the house and noted a few minor changes here and there.  It felt good to be in the house again.  The rest of the day I just relaxed on the couch (stomach was still achy) and settled back in.

It really does feel nice to be home.  Still there is a part of me that wishes the experience in Ireland and Europe could have lasted longer - it truly was 8 of the most amazing months of my life!  But, I know I can always go back.  And when I settle in to permanent teaching work and have regular scheduled holidays off, I will most assuredly make regular trips back to visit.  I already have possible opportunities at Napa Valley College and Foothill College, so here's hoping they work out.  And I'm keeping fingers crossed that I can apply for the December commensement ceremony so I can return in 6 months to graduate in person.  Until then I have my beautiful memories - of my college and campus living experience, my flatemates, my classmates, my fellow society members, my close friends and people who became like second family to me.  I'll always have them with me and Ireland will always be my second home!

As my jacket says......Ireland - The Craic Was Mighty!

Time to say Goodbye . . .
[info]cristiona9
Today is my last full day and night in Ireland.

Jan came to get me and my stuff, as I was warned that I needed to vacate my dorm room by 12 Noon or else the doors would lock on me.  Apparently they jumped the gun and locked them at a quarter till while most of us were still getting our stuff out.  WHAT-ever!  Luckily I didn't trust them ahead of time and kept my door propped open while others had to go to security to get theirs re-opened.

Next Jan and I drove into Rathmines and met up with Stephany at her work.  We walked over to Eddie Rocket's to have some lunch and so Steph and I could say a final goodbye.  It was so hard - she and I became very close and I will miss her so much!

The goodbyes continued as Jan dropped me off at Balazs and Karin's new place and we had a prayer gathering / farewell Chris party.  I was trying so hard to keep it together but then they presented me with gifts (a beautiful group picture from a reflection gathering at the Baha'i Centre, a CD of Traditional Irish Ballads and a box of Swiss Chocolates) and I finally started crying.  I had been holding that in and finally needed to let it out.  The rest of the time we just laughed and enjoyed ourselves.  It was so much fun and a great and memorable way to part with such wonderful friends, who truly became family to me.  ;)

This evening I took the bus out to Dunboyne to head to Jan and Pat's house.  Timmy, a student at UCD, is here as well (he had to vacate his room yesterday).  We had a lovely BBQ steak dinner out on the patio, as the weather has been just grand all day long!  Then we went to Dunboyne Castle Hotel and Pat and his band performed.  I love traditional Irish music, so this was a really wonderful way to spend my last night in Dublin.

Tomorrow morning I fly home to San Francisco departing at 9:40am.  I'm trying to decide whether to stay up all night and then sleep on the plane.  It's a tempting thought, but I'm already pretty tired and don't know how long I can make it.  Maybe I'll go to the Aer Lingus website and see if I can find out what movies will be shown on the flight.  ;)

Time to Pack...
[info]cristiona9

So, today was the "get ready to go home day."  I started over at Bank of Ireland to close my account.  Then I went to Peter Mark and got my hair cut.  I requested Diane, the girl I got last time, and as was the case last time, she did a FANtastic job on the layering and styling.  She is a hair goddess - I have never had such a great hairdresser in my life!!!  I even broke down at the end and asked her if I could take her on the plane with me.

After receiving "the works" I met with Bridge and we had our last lunch at Quizno's together.  I'm really going to miss that girl.  She just cracks me up, she is SO funny!

The rest of the afternoon was spent doing all the packing.  I managed to get it all done in 3 and a half hours - not too shabby.  In the background I played episodes from Season 1 of WKRP In Cinncinati (which I got from Chris when he was here visiting).  That was really fun!  ;)

In the evening I went to my last film club in Dublin.  I coordinated and we showed the film The Pursuit of Happyness with the Benefitting From Life's Tests.  The discussion afterwards went very well and everyone got to see clips of where I'll be flying home to.  ;)

The last stop for the night was meeting the gang for my last pub night in Ireland.  I met up with them at Lord Edwards off of Dame St.  I had never been there before and really enjoyed the atmosphere (although it felt more French then Irish, which was weird).  But, anyway....I had a chance to see everyone one last time for a final goodbye.  Then I walked Stephany home and saw her new apartment.  We had an initial goodbye, but not a final one.  I finally got her gift all ready to go, so I'm going to drop by her work tomorrow to give it to her and then we can say one last goodbye.  That is going to be so hard - I'm just going to miss her so much!!!

The Majestic Landscape of the Emerald Isle
[info]cristiona9
Well after 9 months of seeing mostly green hills compared to the majestic mountains I saw in Scotland, today I was finally able to see the mountains of the Emerald Isle!  I went to Glendalough in Co. Wicklow!

I had mentioned to Terry last night at the holy day celebration that I was planning to spend my last day sight-seeing by taking a bus out to Glendalough and he said he wanted to join me and offered to drive us out.  We had a very fun day!  We walked around 2 of the three lakes and then headed in to Enniskerry to see the resting place of House of Justice member George Townshend.  Then we went to the Powerscourt Gardens to have lunch.  Terry is always so fun to talk to and we really had a great time!

Afterwards we went to the Baha'i Centre to meet up with John and Corrine for tea, as they aren't able to make it to my going-away gathering this Saturday and we wanted to have the chance to say goodbye.  We went out to the garden patio (which I'd actually never been to) and had a lovely chat.

Finally we went on to Joan's who invited us over for dinner (she made spaghetti which I haven't had in SO long - yum yum)!  And Frances was there too!  I was so happy I had the chance to say goodbye to her as well!

At about 8pm I knew that I could not avoid the final thing that I had to do tonight - the bloody laundry.  And, of course, I had some trouble with the machines.  But, it wouldn't have been the "true" experience there if I hadn't.  ha ha ha.... Now, I can just be thankful that I will NEVER have to use those darn machines again!!!!  ;)))

House of Friends
[info]cristiona9

I started the afternoon in the Buttery having my last annual Wed. lunch with the gang (Laura, Alessio and Steph were there).  That was nice to enjoy one last meal with them.  Then I headed off campus for some more sight-seeing and decided to make it a "writers" day.  I went to the James Joyce Cultural Centre and the Dublin Writers Museum - both very interesting!

In the late afternoon I was invited by Bridge to join her and her new flatmate at Cineworld to see the Sex and the City movie.  I've never seen a single episode of that show, nevertheless I thought it would be fun to see it.  I thought it was good, but not great.  I'm sure I would have appreciated it more had I been a fan of the show.

Next stop - O'Neill's for my final Wed. GSU pub night.  It was a small group this week which actually made it perfect.  Everyone wanted to see the poster that Steph made for me and they just loved it.  And then (this is so awesome) Alessio said he wished he could sign it and then came up with the idea to have everyone take 1 coaster from the pub and write me a farewell!  They all know that I love the coasters cause every week when we're there I build houses out of them.  ha ha ha ha....  Now when I'm sitting in front of my laptop working on my thesis and I decide to take a break, I can build a "house of friends"!  I mean, how cool is that!!!  ;)

The final event of the night was the holy day celebration at the National Baha'i Centre.  We had SO much fun together!  The commemoration was of the Ascension of Baha'u'llah at 3:00am in the morning.  So, we met at 11:30pm and had a nice beginning program.  Then we went down to the kitchen for tea and snacks and Sarah played guitar for us as we all sang and taught each other different songs we know.  Then at 3am we said the Tablet of Visitation.  It was such a lovely evening and in the course of our songfest we just laughed and smiled over the sillest of things.  It was wonderful - absolutely and truly wonderful!

I started the morning at the cinemas.  I went to Cineworld to see Nim's Island.  It was definately hokey, but cute.  And I'll see anything with Gerard Butler!  ;)

Afterwards I decided to get in some more Dublin sight-seeing while I still have a chance.  There are still places I've always meant to go and hadn't made it over yet.  So, this afternoon I went to St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublinia: The Viking & Midievil Heritage Centre, Christ Church Cathedral and Dublin Castle.  They were all very nice places.  I also stopped at the Mexican restaurant on Georges St. that I've always been meaning to try.  It was FANtastic!!!  ;)

On Georges St. I stopped into a Kodak store to make a print out of 4 photos of me and Steph that I'm framing as a goodbye gift for her.  But, one of the photos didn't turn out, so I'll need to fix it and then go back and do it again.

In the evening I got together with my friend Pat and he took me for a goodbye dinner at a Japanese restaurant, also on Georges St. that I've also always wanted to try.  It was really really good food.  And Pat had his first Bento Box which he really enjoyed.  We had a good time.

Before bed I put some more photos of my recent trips onto my online photo albums and watched a couple episodes of the show Eli Stone.  My parents love this show and recommended I try it.  I've seen 3 so far, but am not sold.  Right now I think it's just okay... We'll see!  ;)  I also found out from yahoo news about Sydney Pollack passing away.  He was in the movie I saw last night and last night is when he died!!!  So sad!!!

Oh and I got a great e-mail message from the Chair of the Video Arts Dept. at Foothill College!  They are expanding the dept. and she might have some teaching work for me in the winter/spring of next year!  AND she loved hearing about the Worldview Film Club and wants to talk to me about starting a screening series at the Foothill campus!  Whoot!!!!!  ;)  She wants to meet with me in Sept. when she is back from sabbatical - I CAN'T WAIT!!!  ;)

One last day of being a student in Dublin
[info]cristiona9

As silly as this sounds - I wanted one last day of being a student in Dublin (plus I wanted to get a jump start on my intro reading for my thesis).  So, I put the readings in my bag - went to Nude, one of my favorite eateries and enjoyed a delicious lunch while I read.  Then I migrated over to my favorite Starbucks on Grafton St., got my cushioned seat right in front of the big window that overlooks Grafton and continued reading while enjoying a nice Venti Peppermint Mocha Frappacino.  It was nice!  ;)

Afterwards I headed across the River Liffey and was on my way to the Jarvis Centre because I needed to look for a new purse (the strap on the one I was using broke).  But, before I even made it there, I came across this other shop and found an adorable one in there!  Score!  ;)  So, then I went straight on to the Savoy cinemas to get a ticket to see the film Made of Honor.  But, I still had an hour to kill before the film started, so I went to the small cafe right next door and read the last of the reading I wanted to get done for the day.

The film was really cute.  Then I went back to my room and watched the season finales of The Office, Shark and Women's Murder Club.  All good finales!

Low key kinda day
[info]cristiona9

I spent most of today staying in and doing stuff on the computer.  I updated my itunes library and imported new songs from CDs I've purchsed here over the last few months.  I also made the presentation for the film club this coming Friday night.  I've decided to show the film The Pursuit of Happyness with the theme: Benefitting Fom Life's Tests.  The film is set in San Francisco, so I thought it would be a nice homage for my last film night in Dublin, since SF is where I'm flying back to.

I also updated my list of films that i want to try and see before i leave.  Have to enjoy these Dublin cinemas one last time!  ;)

Before going to bed, I watched the season finales of Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters.  WHOA - did they both leave some intriguing cliffhangers!!!!

And the winner is_David - but which one???
[info]cristiona9

I started out the day at the Carrol's store (the big Irish suvineer store).  I wanted to make sure that I bring back home with me anything and everything I can possible want to bring back home with me.  Let me put it this way - I spent so much money they gave me a free CD as a thank you!  ha ha ha...  I had fun and got a lot of great stuff to bring back with me, including the COOLEST t-shirt that has three leprechauns and the text reads: "I See Green People!"  I mean, how perfect is that!  That is totally me!!!!!  ;)  Then I went to the Trinity Collehe shop and got what I wanted out of there.  Don't even ask me how my packing is all going to work out and how the suicases will all magically get filled with everything.  Right now I'm just trying not to even think about it.  Not packing till Friday!

When I got back I couldn't wait any longer to watch the finale of American Idol!  I knew it was the battle of the David's and was dying to know which one took the top prize.  I managed to get through the first episode where they had their sing-off.  Then I took a break and went to the Baha'i Centre for film club (last night was a holy day celebration, so we did Film Club tonight instead).  We watched The Story of Us and had a discussion about the theme of Marriage.  I had never seen that film and thought it was really good!  Then I raced back home (okay not literally) and started to watch the 2 hour results show.  oohhh... Okay, so everything was going fine and I got through the first hour on alluc.org.  Then suddenly I saw that the video only ran for that first hour - they didn't post hour 2.  So, I go to fanpop.com and they don't have the full episode, just you tube cips of specific parts.  And right at the top was a link for the results and the winner was mentioned in the link!  So, I found out who won before I got to actually watch it!  AHHH - now why'd they go and ruin it for me - how annoying!!!  So, that's how it ended for me.  I got to see the moment when the results were revealed and I also watched some other clips of  moments from the second hour so at least I didn't miss the whole second half.  The good news is that my favorite David won!  whoo hoo!!!!  ;)

After that, I called Mom to wish her a happy birthday!

The End of the School Year Celebration
[info]cristiona9

It's all about finding the right dress right?

So, this evening was the end of the year GSU dinner in Commons.  Laura, our Events Coordinator, tried so hard to re-schedule a ball for us, but unfortunately it just didn't work out.  So, the dinner was going to be the official way to celebrate the end of the school year.  Like with the ball, I wanted to look really nice.  So, I got up early this morning, filled myself with a Peppermint Mocha and then hit the stores to find a nice dress.  I went to Dunnes first since that's my favorite store here and I always seem to hit gold.  Well, sure enough I found a great dress that seemed perfect - not to fancy, but classy and elegant (and it stopped me from having to look elsewhere and I was so pooped from just coming home from France all I could think about was relaxing in my room and catching up on American Idol and all my other primetime TV shows).  So, I got the dress and came back to my room and did just that until it was time to get ready for the dinner.

At 5:45pm I walk to the steps of the dining hall where we're all to meet.  And everyone is in jeans and a TV shirt!  ahhhhh....  Apparently the dinner wasn't formal and I was clueless as to that fact (hey I was away and never asked Laura what to wear).  Yikes..  Well, again while I was overdressed in comparsion, I wasn't overdone - my dress was causal enough that I didn't look completely out of place (plus I got nice comments from the girls on how good they thought I looked - God bless good hair days)!  ;)

The dinner was very nice.  The food was fantastic, especially the soup!  It was all much better than the Christmas Commons dinner.  And afterwards we went to Messer Maguires for drinks.  It was there that I got to know a new friend better - Andrea  from Germany.  She is so delightful - very radiant, funny and sweet!  Steph, Andrea and I had a great time chatting the time away!

At the end of the night after Steph and I walked back to our rooms, Steph decided to give me an early going away present.  She presented me with a poster that she created online of different pictures of me and all of my friends at Trinity College.  We were both almost in tears (trying to keep it together)...  I was so touched that she made that for me.  Now when I go home to write my thesis, I can hang the poster on the wall and my friends can all be right there with me!  ;)

Finally seeing France
[info]cristiona9
So, I just spent 9 days in France - after dreaming for so long to see it!

I started in the Côte d'Azur area in the south of France.  3 classmates of mine and I flew into Nice in the early morning to attend the Cannes Film Festival.  We actually stayed in Nice for the trip, as by the time we found out that our accrediation request for Cannes had been approved, every accomodation in Cannes was completely taken.

Nice is so gorgeous I can't even find the words to describe how beauitful.  I was mezmerized with every corner I turned.  The architecture of the buildings, the beach, everything - completely breathtaking!!!  We decided to spend our whole first day there and even "squeezed in some time" to just veg out on the beach.  ha ha....  It was heaven!  I personally got quite gitty when I saw the restaurant and lounge area that was used in a scene in the movie French Kiss.  ;)

The next three days we spent in Cannes.  What can I say about Cannes - I mean, what a blessing it was to be there!  And the biggest suprise came when we discovered that unlike what we had previously been told - Cinephiles, the organization that gave us the accrediation to attend as film students, got permission to give out invitations for shows inside the Palais (the professionals only area)!!!  It was INCREDIBLE!

Day 1 was the best of the three days we spent there.  The very first show we saw actually was a PREMIERE of a Spanish film (which was pretty good).  We walked up a RED CARPET - I mean how cool is that!!!!  ;)  Oh, it was like a dream!  And then in the evening we went to the "cinema on the beach" and saw Bonnie and Clyde.  Not a movie I like really, but it was still fun to watch a film on a huge screen on the beach in a lawn chair.  And Bonnie and Clyde is a classic.  ;)

Day 2 was the "rough day".  From Nice you have to take either the train or a bus.  The train gets you there in 45 mins and the bus over an hour.  Well, that day the trains were on strike so everyone going from Nice to Cannes was forced to take the bus making it not only a long journey, but a tightly squeezed and unpleasant one.  By the time we got there it was already mid-afternoon and there weren't any invitations for any new films in the Palais, so we went to one of the Cinephiles screenings in a venue on the outskirts of Cannes.  It was an Australian film and I'm sorry to say it was pretty bad.  In the evening we had hopes that things would turn around as we later got invitations for the premiere of Sean Penn's new film.  But, the queue was so long we couldn't get in.  It was just an off day....  We decided to just walk around and see all the yachts, have a nice dinner and then head back to Nice.  BUT, the one cool thing about that day - after not getting into the Sean Penn film, we're standing there and suddenly I hear a voice behind me.  I think, "I know that voice."  I turn around to see the face that matches it and low and behold - it was Faye Dunaway.  I got to see Faye Dunaway at the Cannes Film Festival!  ;)

Day 3 was the day I saw the most films.  We got there in the early afternoon and the other girls went to get some lunch, but I decided to delay eating and see a "Cannes Classic" film in the Palais.  It was a Japanese film and was just okay.  The later, we all met back up and went out to another Cinephiles venue to see 2 more films, 1 a Japanese/French co-production and the other a film from Northern Ireland.  The first film, unfortunately for us, didn't have english subtitles, so while the film looked like it could have been good, I can't say it was cause I had little clue as to what was actually happening.  The second film was not my cup of tea - very gritty and depressing....

Even though the films we saw were just alright, just being there was amazing!  Again, I can't even find the words to say how it felt.  I dearly hope that I can attend in the future!

After Nice and Cannes, the others flew back home and I went on to Provance.  Provance is gorgoeus as well!  I spent the first day in Avignon and the second day in the villiage Villeuneuve.  In Avignon I saw the Palace of the Pope (from when the Pope reside there for a few years) and then walked around the rest of the town and even saw where the annual arts festival takes place every April.  In Villeuneuve I just walked around as well and enjoyed the scenery.

The last stop in France was Paris.  Oooohhhh.....where do I begin?  I had romantisized Paris in my mind based on all the movies, music, etc. that highlights that city and I dreamed of going there for half my life.  But, the truth is - I didn't find it to be anything like what I had imagined it would be.  And in that regard it turned into a real let-down and disappointment.  I feel crushed...  But, ya know - that's what happens I guess when you build things up in your head.  oh well....  I'd like to try going again in the future (with a special someone, that might help).  ;)  It's not that Paris is a bad place, it's fine - it's just not like what I dreamed it would be.

But, here are all of the places I got to visit:

Going to France in Style!!!
[info]cristiona9
So, yet again I have one day to re-group and re-pack for my final trip before heading back home in a few weeks.  Tomorrow, some of my classmates and I head to Nice, France so we can attend the Cannes Film Festival!  Whoo hoo!!!!  I am so excited, I still can't believe that we are actually going!!!

Knowing that we'll be spending some time at the beach basking in the glory of the sun, I had to try again at getting some shorts and a tank top.  Went to Dunnes and, of course, had a grand success there!!  I got some adorable stuff, including an adorable handbag (again like last time, only 5 euros - love Dunes, LOVE THEM)!  ;)  Also made sure to pick up some sun tan lotion and self tanning spray.  ;)

Prior to shopping, I met up with Ciamh at Starbucks for one last time - as of 6:30pm today she is officially on her way to Haifa!  It was tough saying goodbye to her - she has become like a sister to me!  I'm really going to miss her!

At 2pm I met with Ruth, my thesis advisor, for the last time in person.  I got up early this morning to make an outline of how I organized my research and how I plan to structure the paper.  She says everything looks great, so I'm really happy to hear that I can crack into it as soon as I get home.  Ruth has been so great as an advisor, I am so lucky to have her!  I also went up to the Film Arts Office to donate a DVD I didn't want anymore to the library and to say goodbye to DG, the Office Administrator.  She's also from California and is just so great!  I'll miss her too!

Also managed to get other to do's crossed off the list.  Got the laundry done, uploaded past photos to clear the camera for new photos and also got the last bit of photocopying done at the library and returned the final books I'll ever borrow from them again.  Ahhh....it's all coming to an end - my academic life here on campus....what a ride it's been - truly!  ;)

Now - must pack for my last big trip around Europe - first France, then Luxumborg, Belgium and Holland!  ;)  Bridge and I met up and then went to dinner at Quizno's.  We're both debating whether to try and sleep early tonight or just stay up until it's time to go to the airport.  We have to catch the aircoach at 3:40am for a 6:30am flight.  Yikes....

A Ball in Hungary! ;)
[info]cristiona9
I had a great time in Hungary!  I flew into Budapest on Friday and then took a train out to Tokaj which is a couple miles outside of the small village my friend Chris has a house in.  It's such a nice area!

On Friday we met up with one of his friends and her two daughters.  They are such a nice family i just fell in love with them!  That evening we went to a music festival at a University where Esther is studying law.  It was massive and so much fun!  In fact, that same night was the night of the Trinity Ball here in Dublin - the one I couldn't get a ticket to.  So, doing this on that very night was perfect, because essentially it was the same set-up - an outdoor concert in the quad.  ha ha ha...  Life is so ironic sometimes!  ha ha....  ;)  On Saturday, Chris and I spent the day walking around Tokaj, which is very lovely.  I really liked it a lot.  Then Sunday we met up with his friends again and toured two wine cellars.  I know, I know, a little boring for me, but Tokaj is wine country and it was still nice spending time with his friends.  Later that evening we had a really nice dinner together and then went back to their house and had tea and cookies and chatted away.  It was great!  Ana and I even got Chris to play a bit of the guitar.  ;)  Today was my last day there.  Chris took me out to another nearby city for lunch and ice cream and then we picked up Esther so Chris could drop her back off at the University after dropping me at the train station.  It was a short visit, but very fun and between Dublin and Hungary, it was nice to be able to spend time with a friend from back home.  ;)

Tonight when I got back I also called Mom, because yesterday was Mother's Day and I didn't get to talk to her.  ;(  I miss her and Dad so much!!

Here comes the Sun little Dublin! ;)
[info]cristiona9
The sun is shining today!  Whoo hoo!  ;)

I started the day in doors.  I had my last school committee meeting with the Dept. of Drama (after going to Oxford I couldn't neglect my duties as the GSU Rep even though I knew it would be BOR-ING!)....  But, then I met up with Stephany and we met up with Diego and another friend of his for lunch.  We got sandwhiches and went to St. Stephen's Green Park.  My gosh the place was packed!!!  Everyone was out having lunch in the park!  I remember taking Chris there just last week and the place was dead.  Now it's completely hip hoppin' and a jumpin'!  ha ha.... ;)

In the evening we had a St. Patty's Day Reunion Dinner.  Meaning - all of us who got together on St. Patrick's Day met up since some of us haven't seen others since then.  It was a lot of fun.  We went to the Korean restaurant where the GSU had their dinner and Karaoke night during first term.  It's pricy, but good.  We had a lot of fun!

Tomorrow I meet up with Chris again in Hungary!

I feel so Wicked! ;)~
[info]cristiona9

I had a great time back in England!  The GSU trip to Oxford was great fun!  We were hosted by our sister school, Oriel College and got to walk around and tour several of the different college campuses.  I especially got giddy when told that the opening to The Golden Compass was filmed all right there.  And Harry Potter was filmed at Christ Cathedral which we also toured (I even bought suvineers - just couldn't resist).  Friday night we had a formal dinner in the dinning hall which was lovely.  Saturday we did lawn bowling and also went punting.  SO much fun!  And Sat. night we went to a pub for dinner - THE pub where C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien used to meet with their writing group (I mean, how freakin' cool is that)!!!  ;)  We later ended the night in the Junior Common Room playing pool.  It was such a fun trip and I'm so happy that I got to be one of the GSU Reps to go!  ;)

After Oxford I said farewell to my classmates at the bus station and I went on to Cambridge to visit my friend Dan who is there studying Computer Science.  I haven't seen him for 5 years or so, so it was really nice to catch up with him.  We spent to half days walking around Cambridge and he showed me the campuses there as well.  Very nice, I thought, but not as majestic as Oxford was.  We also went to a formal dinner in the dinning hall of his college, Trinity Hall (how cool is that - we both go to Trinity.  ha ha....).  Then he took me to a pub called The Castle that he goes to a lot and I got to meet some of his friends.

My last stop before heading back home was London - the capital!  I only got one day really to see it.  Monday night I went to Notting Hill.  I didn't find Hugh Grant, but I think I may have found the park with the black fence where Hugh tries to climb it, slips and then says "wups-c-daisy."  ;)  Then yesterday I walked all around town and saw:
- The Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace
- The Royal Mews
- Kensington Palace
- Westminster Abbey
- Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament
- The Globe Theatre
- St. Paul's Cathedral
- The Millenium Bridge and London Bridge
And since I was in London I knew I just had to see a Broadway show!  So, I chose Wicked and JUST LOVED IT!!!  It was so fantastic!  The leads were INCREDIBLE!  The perfect way to end a great trip!  ;)

I flew back in to Dublin this afternoon (where the weather is WAY warmer - finally, whoo hoo) and had a whole to do list of things to try and get done before heading to my next destination - back to Hungary to visit Chris (this time I'll be seeing where he lives out in the countryside which will be fun - when I was there in December, we were in Budapest the whole time).  Anywho, one of my stops was to Penny's to try and find some summer clothes.  A friend recommended that store to me - huge mistake!  The store was over-crowded and when you try on clothes, you can only take in 4 things at a time - then they make you re-queue!!!  It was crazy and I'll never go back there again.  I should have stuck with Dunnes, I always have great success there!  oh well...live and learn.  Come evening though the day got better.  I went to Sahba's for my last Baha'i devotional here in Dublin.  It was so nice.  And sentimental because that is where I first met some of the Baha'is here (on my 2nd day in Dublin).  They even got me a card and all signed it, it was SO sweet!  I actually prepared the program for the evening and made the theme love and family to thank all of them for being my Irish family!  ;)  After the devotional I then went to O'Neill's for GSU pub night and caught up with everyone about their trip back and told them about the rest of my time in England.  They all want to see the pics I took in Oxford, so I need to get those up on Facebook pronto!  ;)

Day 2 with my First Visitor!
[info]cristiona9
Chris and I tried to get in some sight seeing today, but only managed to see Trinity College and The Book of Kells.  His work threw a project at him right before coming and he had to spend some time working on it.  But, that's okay - we had a great walk around campus and I showed him my dorm and the film building.  And he loved the tour of the Long Room in the Old Library after seeing The Book of Kells.  It really is quite extrordinary.  We also met up with some more of my friends.  We had lunch at Mexico to Rome with Stephany and Bridge and then went to Balazs and Karin's house for dinner.  Balazs and Karin are both Hungarian and Chris has a house in Hungary, so they really enjoyed getting to know one another.  Another fun day!  Tomorrow Chris has one more day in Dublin, but I'm actually headed out to England for the GSU's big trip to Oxford.  Should be a lot of fun!  ;)

My First Visitor! ;))
[info]cristiona9
I am SO excited!  This morning I got my first visitor in Dublin!!  ;)  My friend Chris from California flew in to Dublin to visit me for a few days (he is on his way to Hungary).  We really had a fun day today.  He got in early at 8:30am.  I asked him if he wanted to go straight to sleep because he had to be exhausted, but he said he was okay to go, so I took him all around the centre of the city (after some coffee and tea) - from one stretch to the other.  I showed him all the places I go to here and gave him a flavor of "A Day in the Life of Christina Wright in Dublin."  ha ha...  Then I just had to take him to the Bad Ass Cafe for lunch.  ;)  After that he finally got tired and had to go to his hotel to take a nice long nap.  But, then later in the evening we went to Temple Bar and had a traditional Irish meal at Gallagher's.  Then I took him on a pub crawl so he could experience the Irish "craic."  ;)  Our last stop was at O'Neill's for the GSU Pub Night and he got to meet some of my friends here.  It was a really fun day!!!

Please - No more shopping!!!
[info]cristiona9
Just when I thought I had finished all the shopping yesterday I felt compeled to subject myself to more!  I found out last night that the dinner we will attend in Oxford this Friday night is formal and I didn't really have anything formal to wear.  So, I left at 11:00am this morning and spent the whole bloody day shopping all over the city centre of Dublin!!!  I found the outfit rather quickly, but of course with women it can never just be an outfit, there also has to be nylons, shoes, proper jewlery and a gosh darn handbag to match!

The shoes, of course, were the roughest part as Europe doesn't have "wide" sized shoes.  As it turns out - I found the perfect pair!  They are SKETCHERS!   No joke, I found a dress shoe made by Sketchers.  On the outside it looks like your typical Mary Jane black dress shoe, but the inside and bottom walks like a tennis shoe.  They are so supportive and comfortable!  Probably the best dress shoe I've ever had which made the price (they weren't too expensive, but not too cheap if you get my drift) worth it!  It took me an endless amount of stores to get the right pair though.  5 different stores had it either in black but not in my size, or in my size but not in black.  God bless store number six for making my dreams come true and selling me the darn shoes!  Now I'm all set and would like to not go shoe shopping for about another 5 years!  ha ha...  J/K!  ;)

I also got, yes, a small black handbag for a mere 5 euros (such a steal, I really love Dunnes)!  I already had a necklace picked out and by a stroke of luck found a pair of earings that match perfectly (like you would never know they weren't in a matching set).  So, by the end of the day everything worked out like magic (I even found another pair of shoes - adorable blue sandels that also fit like a sneaker - that will be perfect to take to Nice with me next month).  Still, I'm pooped...

Tonight I chilled out with my fellow members of the Gender Equality Society.  We had our last movie night of the school year and watched A League of Their Own.  I hosted.  Actually that was another part of my long shopping day - the rental store didn't have it (WHAT-EVER) so I had to search numerous stores to finally find it for purchase.  But, the Prez said it's no problem to expense it and the Society will keep it and make it the beginning of a DVD collection about the power of women in film!  ;)  Here's something annoying though - at about 5 mins till 10pm one of the building security guards came in and just stood there for a couple of minutes watching us watch the end of the movie.  I'm like, ah, do we have to leave now?  Suddenly the whole projector system shuts off and he says, "oh, didn't you know that it automatically shuts off by itself come 10pm?"  We were like, umm, NO!!  Geese, he could have told us instead of just standing there for 5 minutes.  Again - WHAT-EVER!  Now I have to go back to the building tomorrow to pick up the DVD as it's currently locked in the DVD Player.  But, it was still a fun night with one of my favorite films!

Tomorrow morning my friend Chris from California comes to visit me for 2 days!  He's the first one from home to come for a visit and I'm really excited!  It will be so nice to share with someone first hand all the joy I've experienced during my months here in this beautiful country!  He'll get to see what "A Day in the Irish Life of Christina Wright" is really like!  ;)

Shopping and Photocopying
[info]cristiona9
That's pretty much what I did today - shopping and photocopying.  Had some gifts to pick up for people then more books to copy pages from in the library for thesis research.

In the evening we had Feast at the Baha'i Centre and during the social portion we had a little going away party for our dear friend Ciamh who will be leaving Dublin on May 13th to go to Haifa, Israel and offer service at the Baha'i World Centre.  She has been one of my very closest friends here in Dublin and is a true spiritual sister to me.  I'm really going to miss her bunches!  I am so happy that she has the incredible opportunity!  I've put her in touch with my friend Paul who is also serving at the World Centre.  They are both going to get along so well - they have a very similar sense of humor!  ha ha ha...  ;)

Gift of the Gab I Have!
[info]cristiona9
Well, after 7 months in Ireland I finally went to Blarney to visit the Blarney Castle and kiss the Blarney stone!  ha ha ha...  Corny, but I just had to do it!!!  ;)

I took a bus down to Cork last night.  The hostel I stayed in was in the perfect location - close walk to the bus station, right next to a stop to head to Blarney and up the hill from the cinema.  I went and saw The Eye which was scarier than I thought it would be, but a good film!

Then today I went to the Castle.  You walk all along through the ruins of it and then when you get to the top there is the stone and they actually have 2 workers there - one to hold you steady while you lye down to kiss it and the other to take your picture.  It was so silly, but just so fun!!
